DEAF GOLF VICTORIA 40TH ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND
Deaf Golf Victoria celebrated its 40th over the recent weekend (November 27-28, 2009) in style by hosting the Victorian Deaf Golf Championships at Kingston Links. 18 Victorian golfers were joined by 12 golfers from interstate, to contest the championships. Melbourne tuned the weather on and we had 4 seasons in a day !
Jack Besley of Melbourne won the Championships with a score of 77 and 74, 3 in front of Denver Magnusson of Kyneton and Craig Douglas of Sydney. The A Grade Handicap section was won by Paul Hammond of Sydney, whilst the B Grade Handicap was won by a young Dechlan Birt, of Bendigo. The Womens Handicap was won by Therese Pierce, of Melbourne. The Junior Handicap category, which is the first time ever that this category has been held in the long proud history of Deaf Golf Victoria, was won by Cameron Gabriel of Geelong.
In the middle of these championships, a marvelous function was held at Knox Club, in which 65 past players, committeepersons, and supporters arrended. Deaf Golf Victoria was also proud to have Coral Hately attend the function. Coral was the wife of Wally Hately who was a proud committeeman of Deaf Golf Victoria over many years. Many wonderful stories were shared and old faces (or foes!) caught up. All left with many warm memories of the night.
